  1. Prepare the apples
    Peel, core, and slice the apples into even slices (about ¼-inch thick).
  2. Layer in the slow cooker
    Place the sliced apples into the slow cooker.
  3. Add sweetness and spice
    Sprinkle granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), and salt evenly over the apples.
  4. Add butter
    Dot the apples with butter pieces.
  5. Optional thickener
    If you prefer a thicker sauce, whisk cornstarch with water or apple juice and pour over the apples.
  6. Cook low and slow
    Cover and cook on: 

    • LOW for 3–4 hours, or
    • HIGH for 1½–2 hours

    Stir gently once or twice during cooking.

    Stir in vanilla extract during the last 15 minutes of cooking.
