Betty Crocker’s Cheese Sandwich Casserole

1. Prep

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

  • Grease an 8×8 or 9×9 inch baking dish.

2. Layer the base

  • Arrange 6 slices of bread in a single layer at the bottom of the dish.

3. Add cheese

  • Place one slice of cheddar on each piece of bread.

4. Top the sandwiches

  • Cover each with another slice of bread, forming sandwiches.

5. Make the custard

  • In a bowl, whisk eggs, milk, salt, mustard, and pepper until smooth.

6. Soak

  • Pour custard evenly over sandwiches.

  • Press down gently to help absorb.

  • Cover and refrigerate 30 minutes (or overnight).

7. Bake

  • Bake uncovered 50–60 minutes, until golden and set.

8. Serve

  • Let rest 5–10 minutes before slicing. Serve warm.
