You’ve probably heard that coffee grounds can be a great ally for plumbing maintenance. Some even claim they help unblock clogged toilets and neutralize bad odors. But beware! This tip is actually a falsely positive idea that can actually worsen your plumbing problems. Explanations.
Coffee grounds: a false friend for your pipes
-
Traffic jams may occur
Contrary to popular belief, coffee grounds don’t dissolve residue in pipes. On the contrary, their fine particles collect and form a compact mass, especially when mixed with other waste products (soap, grease, hair). The result? A blockage that’s difficult to remove and may require a plumber’s intervention.
-
It doesn’t really clean the pipes
Coffee grounds are often considered a “scrub” for pipes, removing accumulated deposits. In fact, they adhere to the walls of the pipes and, over time, reduce their diameter, slowing the water flow.
-
It does not neutralize bad odors in the long term
While coffee grounds can absorb certain odors, this effect is only temporary. Worse still, if they accumulate and stagnate in the pipes, they can ferment and cause new unpleasant odors. Not really the desired effect.
-
It makes sanitary interventions more difficult
If your drains are clogged after repeated use of coffee grounds, conventional solutions like vinegar and baking soda may not be effective. The blockage is difficult to remove and may require pipe removal or professional intervention, which can quickly become expensive.
